Feeding the Hungry

Food Pantry Director Survey (2011)

Emergency food assistance is an important piece of the food system for many American households. Yet, very little is known about the staffing, structure, and operations of the food pantries that serve families in need. In late 2010 and early 2011, the Interdisciplinary Center for Food Security interviewed 39 food pantry directors in the 32-county service area of the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri (the Food Bank). Together, the directors and pantries surveyed serviced more than 80% of the food pantry clients in the region and operated in 28 of the 32 counties serviced by the Food Bank.

Key findings of the survey examined:

  • Food pantry facilities (e.g. refrigeration, freezers, waiting areas, Internet service).
  • Organizational status.
  • Staffing and use of volunteers.
  • Food sources and distribution of major food groups.
  • Additional services and programs offered by food pantries.
